10 years of Labour - Jobcentre Plus

The New Deal and Jobcentre Plus are helping people move from welfare to work and measures such as the National Minimum Wage and Labour’s tax credits help reward work. Jobcentre Plus is helping almost 4,000 people into jobs every working day.

Thanks to Labour’s measures like the New Deal, changes to incapacity benefit and tax credits to make work pay we have made real progress since 1997, with:

  • 2.5 million more people in work
  • 900,000 fewer on benefits
  • 700,000 children helped out of poverty.

Compare that to the way Britain suffered under the Tories, when unemployment hit three million twice and one in five children were growing up in poverty.
